Embassy of India organized an event celebrating Gandhi Jayanti at Svenska Filmhuset, Stockholm on 2nd October 2018. Ambassador of India to Sweden and Latvia Ms. Monika Kapil Mohta delivered opening remarks in which, among other things, she underlined the relevance of the ideas and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi in today’s world. This was followed by the release of commemorative stamps on Mahatma Gandhi by Ambassador Mohta, Ms. Camilla Mellander, Deputy Director General/ Head of Department for Trade Promotion, Nation Branding and CSR, Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Elisabeth Nilsson, former Governor of östergöttland County, Mr. Håkan Kingstedt, Chairman, Sweden-India Business Council, Mr. Kurt Bratteby, Head of Department of International Relations, Swedish Institute along with children from Saraswathy Kalakendra, Institution of Fine Arts, Stockholm, dressed as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Kasturba Gandhi. The music video of Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite Bhajan, “Vaishnav Jan to Tene Kahiye ji” rendered by prominent Swedish opera Singer Charlotta Huldt was also released. Video slides on Mahatma Gandhi’s message to the world were played thereafter. The event was well attended by over 140 people representing the Swedish Government, Diplomatic Corps in Stockholm, media, cross sections of Swedish society in addition to the Indian diaspora in Sweden.
